A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been seized.

One account, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," stated an industry expert.

A small number of other traders also made significant sums from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule introduced on Monday would prevent government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
