Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” stated a national union president, representing the AFGE.

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.
