European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
