Early trials indicate it could assist patients lose up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in individuals administering products of unknown origin.

Several experts stated the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or prison.

Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with numerous of users, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at residence.

After moments of joining one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Within these communities, posts display dark colored parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should last, sellers give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Actions

A representative for the messaging service stated it regularly moderated dangerous material on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not contain what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to recent cost increases for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are turning to social media. But fake treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she explained.

Her team has previously seen patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially serious medical dangers”.
